Complete Guide: AC3 to AAC Converter
Everything you need to know about using this tool effectively
The AC3 to AAC Converter decodes Dolby Digital AC3 audio and re-encodes it as AAC. AAC is the standard codec for Apple devices, YouTube, and modern streaming platforms, offering good quality at compact file sizes. All conversion runs in your browser using FFmpeg via WebAssembly.
AC3 (Dolby Digital) is a legacy multichannel codec used in DVDs and broadcast television. AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is its modern successor, used natively on all Apple devices, Android, and major streaming services. This tool uses FFmpeg to decode AC3 and the browser's WebCodecs API to encode the result as AAC.
Play DVD audio on Apple devices
Convert AC3 audio from DVD rips to AAC for native playback on iPhone, iPad, and macOS without any third-party audio apps.
Upload broadcast audio to streaming platforms
YouTube, Apple Music, and Spotify accept AAC but not AC3. Convert broadcast recordings to AAC before uploading.
Reduce file size from broadcast sources
AAC at 128 kbps produces files much smaller than broadcast AC3 while maintaining good perceptual quality for most listeners.
Modernise a Dolby Digital archive
Convert a collection of AC3 files to AAC for compatibility with modern media libraries and devices.
Prepare audio for mobile distribution
AAC is the preferred audio codec for mobile apps and streaming. Convert AC3 source material to AAC for efficient delivery to mobile users.
Upload AC3 file
Click to browse or drag and drop your AC3 file into the upload area.
Wait for FFmpeg to load
On first use, the FFmpeg WebAssembly binary loads from a CDN. This takes a few seconds.
Convert
Click Convert to AAC. FFmpeg decodes the AC3 and the browser encodes the result as AAC.
Download AAC
Download your AAC file for playback on Apple devices, Android, or any modern platform.
AAC encoding requires a Chromium-based browser (Chrome, Edge, Brave). Firefox users should choose MP3 or OGG output instead.
Multichannel AC3 will be downmixed to stereo in the AAC output.
For editing, convert to WAV first before encoding to AAC.
AC3 embedded in video containers must be extracted to a standalone .ac3 file before using this tool.
AAC at 128 kbps suits most use cases. Use higher bitrates only if quality is critical.
Is AAC the same as Dolby Digital?
No. AC3 (Dolby Digital) and AAC are different codecs. AAC was developed by a broader consortium as a successor to MP3, while AC3 was developed specifically by Dolby for multichannel cinema and home theatre audio.
Does converting AC3 to AAC lose quality?
Yes. Both are lossy formats. Transcoding applies a second round of compression and causes some quality loss.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. FFmpeg runs in your browser via WebAssembly. Files are processed locally.
Why does the first conversion take longer?
The first conversion loads the FFmpeg WebAssembly binary. This takes a few seconds. Subsequent conversions are immediate.
Will surround sound be preserved in the AAC output?
No. Multichannel AC3 is downmixed to stereo. The individual surround channels are not preserved in the AAC output.
