Complete Guide: Audio Distortion
Everything you need to know about using this tool effectively
The Audio Distortion tool applies waveshaping distortion to your audio files, ranging from subtle warm saturation to aggressive clipping and fuzz. It uses a WaveShaperNode with a custom transfer curve to reshape the audio waveform, introducing harmonics and grit. All processing happens in your browser with no file uploads.
This tool reshapes the audio waveform using a custom waveshaping curve via the Web Audio API. The distortion amount controls how aggressively the signal is clipped, adding harmonics and creating effects from warm tube-style overdrive to harsh digital fuzz.
Guitar and Instrument Processing
Add overdrive or fuzz to clean guitar recordings, synth patches, or bass lines without needing physical pedals or amp simulators.
Aggressive Vocal Effects
Distort vocal recordings for intros, breakdowns, or stylized sections. Light distortion adds edge while heavy settings create screaming, robotic textures.
Sound Design and Foley
Transform clean sound effects into gritty, textured versions for film, games, or media projects. Distortion adds intensity and presence to any source material.
Lo-Fi and Industrial Music
Heavy distortion is a defining characteristic of industrial, noise, and lo-fi genres. Push the amount high for wall-of-sound textures.
Drum Processing
Add punch and aggression to drum samples. Light distortion on kicks adds weight, while heavier settings on snares create explosive transients.
Upload Your Audio File
Click the upload area or drag and drop your audio file into the tool.
Set the Distortion Amount
Use the slider to control intensity. Low values (1-20) add subtle warmth. Mid values (20-60) produce classic overdrive. High values (60-100) create aggressive fuzz and clipping.
Preview and Adjust
Play back the result and adjust the distortion amount until you find the right balance of grit and clarity.

Start with low distortion (10-20) and increase gradually - a little goes a long way
Distortion works best on single instruments rather than full mixes, which can turn muddy
Follow distortion with a low-pass filter to tame harsh high frequencies
Try combining light distortion with reverb for warm, saturated ambient textures
Keep your original clean file since distortion is a destructive effect
What is the difference between distortion and overdrive?
They are points on the same spectrum. Overdrive is mild distortion that adds warmth and subtle harmonics, similar to a tube amp pushed slightly. Distortion is more aggressive clipping that reshapes the waveform more dramatically. This tool covers both ranges with the amount slider.
Will distortion make my audio louder?
Distortion compresses the dynamic range and can increase perceived loudness, but the peak level stays within bounds. The output may sound louder because the quieter parts are brought up closer to the loud parts.
Does this tool upload my files?
No. All processing runs locally in your browser using the Web Audio API. Your files never leave your device.
What audio formats are supported?
Any format your browser can decode, including MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, AAC, and WebM.
