Complete Guide: WMA Player
Everything you need to know about using this tool effectively
The WMA Player lets you play Windows Media Audio files directly in your browser without installing Windows Media Player or any software. WMA is Microsoft's proprietary audio codec used in Windows recordings, Xbox captures, and older media libraries. Playback runs locally using FFmpeg via WebAssembly.
WMA (Windows Media Audio) is a proprietary Microsoft audio codec with limited support outside Windows. Most browsers, Mac and Linux systems, and non-Windows media players cannot play WMA files natively. This player uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly to decode WMA in your browser, making playback available on any device.
Open WMA files on macOS or Linux
Play WMA recordings from Windows systems on macOS or Linux where WMA codec support is not installed by default.
Preview WMA files before converting
Listen to a WMA file before deciding to convert it to MP3 or AAC, saving time by previewing first.
Play Xbox Game Bar recordings
Xbox Game Bar saves audio captures as WMA. Play them back in any browser without needing the Windows app.
Access old Windows Media Player libraries
Open and play WMA files from older Windows media collections without installing legacy software.
Quick audio verification
Verify that a WMA file is intact and contains the expected audio before archiving or converting it.
Upload WMA file
Click to browse or drag and drop your WMA file into the upload area.
Wait for FFmpeg to load
On first use, the FFmpeg WebAssembly binary loads from a CDN. This takes a few seconds. Subsequent plays in the same session are immediate.
Play and listen
Use the playback controls to play, pause, seek, and adjust volume.
WMA files with DRM (Digital Rights Management) cannot be played by this tool.
If you want to save the audio in a universal format, use the WMA to MP3 or WMA to WAV converter.
On first use, wait a few seconds for the FFmpeg WebAssembly binary to load before playback begins.
Large WMA files may take a moment to decode before playback starts.
This player works on mobile browsers as well as desktop.
Why can't my browser play WMA files natively?
WMA is a proprietary Microsoft codec. Browser vendors do not include WMA decoders because Microsoft's licensing terms make it impractical. This player uses FFmpeg WebAssembly to decode WMA in your browser instead.
Can I play DRM-protected WMA files?
No. DRM-protected WMA files are encrypted and cannot be decoded without the original DRM licence. Only unprotected WMA files are supported.
Is my WMA file uploaded to a server?
No. FFmpeg runs in your browser via WebAssembly. Your file is decoded locally and never sent to any server.
Why does playback take a moment to start the first time?
The FFmpeg WebAssembly binary needs to load from a CDN on first use. This is approximately 30 MB and takes a few seconds. Playback of subsequent files in the same session is immediate.
Can I download the audio in a different format after playing?
This tool is for playback only. Use the WMA to MP3 or WMA to WAV converter to save the audio in a different format.
