What is XYZ to RGB Converter?
The XYZ to RGB Converter turns CIE XYZ tristimulus values into sRGB red, green, and blue values. Enter X, Y, and Z with Y scaled to 100, and read the RGB result with a color preview. The conversion uses the D65 matrix and the sRGB gamma curve.
How does XYZ to RGB Converter work?
The converter multiplies the XYZ values, divided by 100, by the inverse sRGB matrix to get linear RGB. It then applies the sRGB transfer function, a power curve with a 1/2.4 exponent and a linear section near black, and scales the result to 0 through 255.
XYZ values for very saturated colors can produce linear RGB values below 0 or above 1. The tool clamps each channel to 0 through 255, so out-of-gamut colors show as the nearest displayable color.
Key Features
- Converts CIE XYZ to sRGB
- Uses the D65 inverse sRGB matrix
- Applies the sRGB transfer function
- Accepts X up to 95.047, Y up to 100, Z up to 108.883
- Live color preview of the result
- Four preset colors with matching XYZ values
Common Use Cases
Display a measured color
Convert XYZ values from a colorimeter or spectral calculation into RGB for on-screen use.
Check a color science calculation
Verify the last step of a hand calculation or script that outputs XYZ.
Move values from a color profile
Convert XYZ primaries or white points listed in an ICC profile into RGB.
Test a conversion library
Compare your own code against the results of a reference conversion.
How to Use This Tool
Enter X, Y, and Z
Use the sliders or type values. Y is scaled so that the white point has Y equal to 100.
Review the preview
The swatch shows the color that the RGB result produces.
Copy the RGB values
Read the red, green, and blue channels or copy the rgb() string.
Check for clipping
XYZ values that fall outside the sRGB gamut are clipped to the 0 to 255 range, so the RGB result is the nearest displayable color.
Pro Tips
- 1
Use a 0 to 100 scale for Y. If your source uses 0 to 1, multiply all three values by 100 first.
- 2
The D65 white point is X 95.047, Y 100, Z 108.883, and converts to rgb(255, 255, 255).
- 3
A result stuck at 0 or 255 on one channel means the XYZ color is outside the sRGB gamut.
- 4
This tool does not adapt for a D50 white point, so ICC profile XYZ values in D50 will shift.
- 5
Use the RGB to XYZ Converter to check a result by converting it back.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you convert XYZ to RGB?
Divide XYZ by 100, multiply by the inverse sRGB matrix to get linear RGB, then apply the sRGB gamma curve and scale to 0 through 255. This tool does that for you.
What scale does the Y value use?
Y is scaled to 100 for the white point. If your XYZ values are on a 0 to 1 scale, multiply each by 100 before entering them.
Which white point does this converter use?
D65, with X 95.047, Y 100, and Z 108.883. D50 values need chromatic adaptation first.
Why is one RGB channel clamped to 0?
The XYZ color lies outside the range that sRGB can display. The converter clamps negative linear values to 0 and values above 1 to 255.
What is XYZ 41.24, 21.27, 1.93?
That is the sRGB red primary. It converts to rgb(255, 0, 0).
