Complete Guide: PDF Watermark
Everything you need to know about using this tool effectively
The PDF Watermark tool adds a repeating text watermark across every page of a PDF. You enter the watermark text, choose a position from nine grid locations, set the font size between 24 and 72 pixels, and adjust opacity from 10 to 80 percent. The watermark is rendered in red at a diagonal angle on every page. All processing happens in the browser.
This tool uses pdf-lib to draw a text element on each page of the PDF. The text is placed at the position you select, rotated diagonally, colored red, and set to the opacity you choose. It becomes part of the page content layer. The original document text and images are not modified.
Marking documents as drafts
Add a 'DRAFT' watermark to documents that are still under review so recipients know they are not final.
Labeling confidential files
Stamp 'CONFIDENTIAL' on internal documents before sharing them with external parties to set expectations about handling.
Adding version identifiers
Watermark 'REVISED' or 'v2.0' on updated documents so team members can distinguish versions.
Copyright marking
Add a copyright notice or company name to PDFs that will be distributed publicly to discourage unauthorized use.
Upload a PDF
Click the upload area or drag your PDF onto the page.
Enter watermark text
Type the text you want to appear on every page, such as 'CONFIDENTIAL' or 'DRAFT'.
Choose position, size, and opacity
Select a position from the nine grid options, set the font size, and adjust the opacity slider.
Download the watermarked PDF
Click Add Watermark, then download the result. The filename includes a '_watermarked' suffix.
Keep opacity between 20 and 40 percent for a watermark that is visible but does not block the content.
Center position works well for general watermarking. Corner positions are better for copyright notices.
The watermark is baked into the PDF content. To remove it, you need the original unwatermarked file.
Larger font sizes (48 to 72 pixels) are more visible when printing.
Can I use a custom color for the watermark?
Not currently. The watermark is always rendered in red, which provides good visibility across different page backgrounds.
Will the watermark show when printed?
Yes. The watermark is part of the page content, so it appears both on screen and on printed output. It cannot be hidden by switching to a different viewing mode.
Can I remove a watermark after adding it?
The watermark becomes part of the page content. You would need the original unwatermarked file to start over.
Can I watermark only some pages?
The tool applies the watermark to all pages. To watermark specific pages, split the PDF first, watermark the parts you need, then merge.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. All processing happens in your browser using JavaScript. The file never leaves your device.
