What is Vowel and Consonant Counter?

The Vowel and Consonant Counter splits the letters in a passage into vowels and consonants and reports each total. Paste any text and the tool returns the vowel count, the consonant count, the letter total, and the vowel share as a percentage. Only the letters A to Z are counted, so digits, spaces, and punctuation do not affect the result. Y is treated as a consonant, and the scan runs on your device so the pasted text stays in the tab.

How does Vowel and Consonant Counter work?

The counter matches every letter in the input with the pattern [a-zA-Z], then tests each match against the five vowel characters A, E, I, O, U in both cases. Every remaining letter is added to the consonant total.

The vowel share is the vowel count divided by the letter total, multiplied by 100 and rounded to one decimal place. Because the scan works on letters only, a sentence with many digits or symbols can have a letter total far below its character count.

  • Separate vowel and consonant totals
  • Vowel share as a percentage of all letters

  • Analysing vowel-heavy prose

Compare passages to see which one leans on open vowel sounds, which matters for slogans and brand names.

  • Building letter-pattern puzzles

Measure the vowel share of a candidate phrase when designing an anagram, cipher, or word game clue.

  • Reviewing early-reader text

Check that a short story uses a balanced mix of vowel and consonant patterns for the reading level it targets.

  • Studying vowel distribution

Compare the vowel share of samples from different languages or writing styles in a linguistics exercise.

Pro Tips

  • 1

Y is counted as a consonant here, so words like rhythm contribute no vowels to the total.

  • 2

If the letter total looks much smaller than the character count, the text probably contains many digits or symbols.

  • 3

Accented letters such as e with an acute accent are skipped, so strip accents first if they matter to your count.

  • 4

The pangram The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog reports a vowel share of 31.4 percent, which makes it a useful baseline.

  • 5

Use the same tool for both samples when comparing two passages, so the counting rules stay consistent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Y count as a vowel?

No. The counter treats A, E, I, O, and U as vowels and counts Y as a consonant, including in words like myth and rhythm where Y carries a vowel sound.

Are accented letters counted as vowels?

No. Only the unaccented letters A to Z are matched, so a character such as e with an acute accent is skipped entirely. Remove accents before counting if those letters should be included.

Why is the letter total lower than the character count?

The character counter includes spaces, digits, and punctuation, while this tool counts letters only. A sentence with dates, prices, or heavy punctuation will show a much lower letter total.

Does case affect the result?

No. Uppercase and lowercase versions of the same letter are treated identically, so changing the case of a passage does not change any total.

How do I count vowels in a long document?

Paste the whole document into the input box and run the count once. The tool has no fixed length limit and processes the full text in a single pass.
