Complete Guide: CAF to MP3 Converter
Everything you need to know about using this tool effectively
The CAF to MP3 Converter decodes Apple Core Audio Format files and re-encodes them as MP3. MP3 is supported by every device and platform, making it the simplest format for sharing iOS or macOS audio recordings anywhere. All conversion runs in your browser using FFmpeg via WebAssembly.
CAF (Core Audio Format) is Apple's proprietary audio container used by iOS Voice Memos, GarageBand, and other Apple audio applications. It has no support outside the Apple ecosystem. This tool uses FFmpeg to decode CAF and produce an MP3 file that plays on any phone, computer, or media player without Apple software.
Share iOS voice memos on any device
Convert CAF voice memos from iOS Voice Memos to MP3 to share with Android users, Windows users, or anyone without Apple software.
Upload Apple recordings online
Podcast hosts, social media platforms, and audio sharing sites accept MP3 but not CAF. Convert before uploading.
Send voice messages across platforms
Convert CAF recordings to MP3 to send via email or messaging apps to recipients who cannot play CAF files.
Compress GarageBand exports
CAF files from GarageBand can be large. Convert to MP3 for a smaller, broadly compatible file for sharing or distribution.
Play Apple recordings on non-Apple media players
Media players on Windows, Android, and smart TVs support MP3 but not CAF. Convert to play Apple recordings on any device.
Export or locate your CAF file
Share the recording from iOS Voice Memos or export from GarageBand to get a .caf file.
Upload CAF file
Click to browse or drag and drop your CAF file into the upload area.

Download MP3
Download your MP3 file for sharing or playback on any device.
If the CAF contains lossy AAC, converting to MP3 applies a second round of lossy compression. Start from the highest quality source.
For editing, convert to WAV first rather than going directly to MP3.
Keep your original CAF files after conversion.
MP3 at 128 kbps is suitable for voice. Use 192 kbps or higher for music.
On first use, wait a few seconds for the FFmpeg WebAssembly binary to load.
Does converting CAF to MP3 lose quality?
If the CAF contains AAC audio, converting to MP3 applies a second round of lossy compression, causing some quality loss. If the CAF contains lossless PCM, only one round of compression is applied.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. FFmpeg runs in your browser via WebAssembly. Files are processed locally.
Why does the first conversion take longer?
The first conversion loads the FFmpeg WebAssembly binary. This takes a few seconds. Subsequent conversions are immediate.
How do I export a CAF file from iOS?
In Voice Memos, tap the three-dot menu and choose Share, then Save to Files. The file will be exported to iCloud Drive.
Is MP3 or AAC better for sharing Apple recordings?
AAC is technically superior, but MP3 has wider device compatibility. For sharing with the broadest possible audience, MP3 is the safer choice.
