Complete Guide: CAF to WAV Converter
Everything you need to know about using this tool effectively
The CAF to WAV Converter decodes Apple Core Audio Format files into uncompressed WAV. CAF is used by iOS and macOS apps including GarageBand and the iOS Voice Memos app. Converting to WAV produces a universally compatible file that opens in any audio editor on any platform. All conversion runs in your browser using FFmpeg via WebAssembly.
CAF (Core Audio Format) is Apple's flexible audio container introduced in macOS 10.4. It can hold audio encoded in any codec Apple supports, including PCM, AAC, ALAC, and MP3. CAF is used internally by iOS voice memos, GarageBand projects, and various macOS audio APIs. The format is not natively supported outside the Apple ecosystem, making FFmpeg essential for decoding on other platforms.
Open iOS voice memos on a PC
iOS Voice Memos exports as CAF. Convert to WAV to open the recording in any audio editor on Windows or Linux.
Import GarageBand audio on non-Apple systems
CAF files exported from GarageBand can be converted to WAV for use in cross-platform DAWs such as Reaper or Audacity.
Archive iOS recordings
Convert CAF recordings to WAV for long-term archival in a format that does not depend on Apple software or codecs.
Share Apple audio recordings cross-platform
WAV is universally playable. Convert CAF files to share iOS or macOS recordings with Windows or Android users.
Process CAF audio in professional tools
Many professional audio editors and video production tools only accept standard formats. Convert CAF to WAV before importing into your production workflow.
Export or locate your CAF file
From iOS Voice Memos, share the recording and choose to save as a file. From macOS apps, export or locate the .caf file.
Upload CAF file
Click to browse or drag and drop your CAF file into the upload area.
Wait for FFmpeg to load
On first use, the FFmpeg WebAssembly binary loads from a CDN. This takes a few seconds. Subsequent conversions are immediate.
Convert and download
Click Convert to WAV. Download your WAV file for use in any audio editor or media player.
iOS Voice Memos exports CAF files by default when shared as a file attachment.
CAF files can contain lossless PCM or lossy AAC. If the source is PCM, the WAV will be a true lossless copy.
WAV files are larger than CAF. Allow extra storage space for the output.
Keep your original CAF files after conversion in case the internal codec is lossless.
For distribution, convert the WAV to MP3 or AAC after editing.
Why can't I open CAF files on Windows?
CAF is an Apple-proprietary container format. Windows does not include CAF decoders by default. Converting to WAV resolves the compatibility issue.
Does converting CAF to WAV lose quality?
It depends on the codec inside the CAF file. If the CAF contains PCM audio, the WAV conversion is lossless. If the CAF contains AAC, some quality was already lost at recording time and the WAV preserves it without further loss.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. FFmpeg runs in your browser via WebAssembly. Your files are processed locally and never sent to any server.
Why does the first conversion take longer?
The first conversion loads the FFmpeg WebAssembly binary. This takes a few seconds. Subsequent conversions are immediate.
How do I get the CAF file from iOS Voice Memos?
In the Voice Memos app, tap the three-dot menu on the recording and choose Share. Select Save to Files to export the .m4a or .caf file to your iCloud Drive, then access it on your computer.
