What is Musepack Player?
The Musepack Player plays .mpc audio files in your browser. Musepack is a lossy music format that browsers and many default players do not support. Choose a file, wait for FFmpeg to load, and press play.
How does Musepack Player work?
Musepack (MPC) is a lossy audio codec tuned for music at high bitrates. It descends from MPEGplus and was popular in personal music collections in the 2000s. It exists in two stream versions, SV7 and SV8, which are not compatible with each other.
This tool uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly with both the SV7 and SV8 decoders, and converts the result to 16-bit PCM at 44.1 kHz for the Web Audio player.
Key Features
- Decodes Musepack SV7 and SV8 streams
- Uses the FFmpeg mpc7 and mpc8 decoders
- Output is 16-bit PCM at 44.1 kHz
- Play, pause, and seek controls
- Decoding runs in WebAssembly on your device
Common Use Cases
Play an old music collection
Open .mpc rips that were made when Musepack was a common choice for high-quality lossy audio.
Check a file before converting
Listen to an MPC track to confirm it is intact before you move it to another format.
Open Musepack without installing a decoder
Listen on a computer where no Musepack plugin or codec is installed.
Compare a lossy rip against the source
Play the MPC file and check how it sounds before you remove the original.
How to Use This Tool
Choose an MPC file
Click the upload area or drop a .mpc file onto it.
Wait for FFmpeg
The decoder loads on first use and stays loaded for the rest of the session.
Press play
Start playback to hear the decoded Musepack audio.
Pause or seek
Use the player controls to pause, resume, or jump to another position in the file.
Pro Tips
- 1
SV7 and SV8 files both play. You do not need to know which version a file uses.
- 2
Tags stored in an APE tag block are ignored. Only the audio plays.
- 3
Musepack is lossy, so converting it to another lossy format loses quality again.
- 4
Large albums stored as a single .mpc file take longer to decode before playback starts.
- 5
If playback fails, check that the file is not a renamed MP3 or WAV.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I play an MPC file?
Choose the .mpc file in the Musepack Player and press play. FFmpeg decodes it in your browser, so no decoder install is required.
What is Musepack?
Musepack is a lossy audio codec designed for music at high bitrates. Its files end in .mpc and it was widely used for personal music archives in the 2000s.
Is Musepack lossless?
No. Musepack is a lossy format, although at high bitrates it was valued for transparent quality.
What is the difference between Musepack SV7 and SV8?
They are two incompatible stream versions. SV8 adds a more robust container and better seeking, and FFmpeg includes a separate decoder for each.
Why can't my music player open MPC files?
Musepack was never widely adopted by device makers, so most default players and browsers lack a decoder.
